An area in St Helier closed by a sinkhole is set to remain shut for at least another week, the Government of Jersey has said.

A sinkhole caused by a burst water main appeared in Rouge Bouillon between Clarendon Road and Palmyra Road on 18 December.

The government said it was concerned a building at the junction within the closed area could be unsafe for pedestrians and residents.

"The situation is highly complex with several adjacent walls and buildings that are unsafe and severely cracked," it said.

"Further investigatory work is required to assess the full extent of the damage and determine how long the closure will remain in place."

It asked drivers to continue to avoid the area and use alternative routes to access the town.
