Motorists have been advised to plan ahead as a two-mile stretch of the A303 will be closed for two consecutive weekends.

The road, between Newtown and Stopgate Cross in Somerset, has already been shut overnight on weekdays since 13 January for resurfacing work.

National Highways will now finish the repairs from Friday 24 to Monday 27 January and from Friday 31 January to Monday 3 February.

It says the works "will improve safety and bring smoother journeys for motorists".

The weekend closures will be in effect from 20:00 GMT on the Friday until 06:00 GMT on the Monday.

Eastbound traffic will be diverted via the A30 and Stooper's Hill to rejoin the A303 north of Newtown.

Drivers travelling westbound will follow the same diversion but in reverse.

National Highways said people should expect journeys to take slightly longer than usual.
