Library closes for month as works go ahead
A library has temporarily closed as it undergoes a £3.3m transformation.
Works to Carlisle Library, in The Lanes shopping centre, were expected to take 10 to 12 months, Cumberland Council said.
As well as structural work such as rewiring, the authority said the facility would be transformed into a "modern space" with a children's zone, study spaces and adult learning classrooms.
A temporary facility offering key services in the same building will open by the end of February.
The revamp is being funded by the government as part of a £19.7m Carlisle Town Deal programme.
The library, on the first floor of the shopping centre, opened in April 1986.
Cumberland Council said it "appreciated the community's patience and support during this temporary closure and looks forward to unveiling a modern library that will serve as a cornerstone of learning and connection".
During February, service points will be available at library links including at the community centres at Morton Manor, Denton Holme and Harraby.
The council said requests would still be processed and the digital library would remain available via the Borrowbox app.
The Adult Learning service has already relocated to the civic centre.
