A man has been airlifted to hospital in a rescue from the summit of a Lake District mountain.

The 20-year-old severely injured his ankle after slipping on ice on the top of the 2847ft (868m) high Blencathra on Saturday, Keswick Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) said.

KMRT said a helicopter from the North West Air Ambulance Service was able to land nearby but there were concerns it might not be able to take off due to the severe weather conditions.

Volunteers went up the mountain on foot and some helped bring the stretcher carrying the man from the summit to the helicopter, before a clear spell of weather enabled the NWAAS crew to fly him to hospital.
