Man charged with murder appears in court
A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman in Plymouth.
Paul Butler, 53, of Stangray Avenue, appeared at Plymouth Magistrates Court accused of killing university lecturer Claire Chick.
The 48-year-old was found seriously injured in West Hoe Road on Wednesday and later died in hospital.
Mr Butler, also charged with the unlawful possession of a bladed article, was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Plymouth Crown Court on Tuesday and on Friday 3 March.
He spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
He was wearing a custody-issued grey tracksuit.
Magistrate District Judge Stuart Smith said he wanted to express his condolences to the family of Claire Chick - who were in the public gallery.
"This must be an incredibly difficult time," he said.
"The pain, anger and loss you are suffering is unimaginable."
