Police described the incident as "unacceptable"

Two men have been left injured after an "unprovoked" attack following a football match, police say.

The two victims, aged 20 and 49, were assaulted by a group of men while leaving Ashton Gate Stadium after the game between Bristol City and Blackburn Rovers on Saturday afternoon.

They were walking along Marina Dolman Way outside the stadium in south Bristol at the time of the incident.

Avon and Somerset Police said it was aware of footage circulating on social media of the attack and would be using it to identify those responsible.

Sgt Sam Bracey described the incident as "completely unacceptable", adding that the attack had been "unprovoked" and only brought to an end when members of the public stepped in.

"We're making enquiries at pace to identify those responsible and we're working closely with Bristol City Football Club to review all available CCTV," he added.

"In addition to a criminal investigation, we'll also be pursuing football banning orders, as there's no place for this kind of indiscriminate violence in football."

He urged anyone with information about the incident to get in touch.

A Bristol City Football Club spokesperson said they were "appalled" by the incident and would "take action against those who engage in such violent behaviour".

They also confirmed the club would "fully support" any football-wide banning orders.
