Work to create a new youth centre - with the capacity to support more than 400 children every week - has begun.

Lyndhurst Centre, in Park North, is being converted by local contractor RJ Leighfield after it was allocated a grant of £3.8m from the government's Youth Investment Fund.

The inclusive centre, which will be called 'The Base' is being provided by Swindon Borough Council and will give services to children between 11 and 16.

Councillor Paul Dixon said: "This project is fundamental to our work in building a fairer Swindon."

"The Base has been led by young people for young people, and I am delighted to see the progress that has been made," he added.

Dixon said when The Base, a name chosen by children who are leading on the project, opens later in the year, it would be a "landmark moment for young people" in the town.

"I can't wait to see the impact it will have for our local community," he added.

Young people were consulted on what they would like to have in the centre and will also be involved in a management committee.

New facilities will include a gym, a hair and beauty hub, an alternative education facility, music booths and a kitchen with teaching provisions.

There will also be activities for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and opportunities for young people to engage with local training and employment opportunities in the borough.

Toby, 17, one of the Young Changemakers from local youth charity WAY, said: "For too long others have decided what's best for us young people. Now it's our turn."

Dixon added he was "thrilled" young people had engaged and given their input to ensure the centre would provide the "right mix of activities".

The building, which is on track to be completed in March 2025, will be open from 08:00 until 22:00.
