A city centre route will be closed for approximately 16 weeks for regeneration works.

English Street in Carlisle, Cumbria, would close from Monday as part of the Southern Gateway project, Cumberland Council said.

Works on the pedestrian and cycling infrastructure are planned, including wider footways and segregated cycle lanes.

The closure was needed to complete drainage works and a carriageway upgrade, the authority said.

The £19.7m project aims to regenerate the southern entrance to Carlisle and is now expected to be completed by early Autumn 2025.

Construction work in the area started in June 2024.

Additional night closures had also been scheduled for Botchergate, The Crescent, and Court Square this month, the Labour-led council said.

Pedestrian diversion routes will be put in place.
