New rail station entrance plan to 'boost visitors'
A new railway station entrance could be built to improve traffic and make the area more welcoming to visitors.
The change is part of a planned £27m redevelopment of Carlisle Station which will involve the creation of a new car park and square.
Cumberland Council said the changes would move traffic from the north of the station to the south, easing congestion and freeing up space at Court Square for pedestrians.
Council leader Mark Fryer said the plans were "designed to make Carlisle Station easier to use, encourage more visitors to the city and support local businesses".
New parking spaces, electric charging points and drop-off and pick-up zones would be added as part of the proposals.
The square would also include bicycle parking, seating, new lighting and plants.
The project is to receive £20m from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, which is funded by the UK and Scottish governments.
If planning is approved, construction will begin in spring 2025.
