Low carbon energy centre gets go ahead

Plans to build a low-carbon energy centre in Hull have been approved.

It will be located on a car park next to a casino on Trippett Street in the city centre.

The building will have a 75ft (23m) high chimney flue and will produce hot water for a district heating scheme.

Planning documents described the structure as "a new landmark that contributes to the city's identity".

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the plant will house water source heat pumps, a transformer, and a boiler room in addition to space for educational visits.

The site was originally allocated for housing, so a planning meeting was needed to approve the change of use.

Chair of the committee councillor Garreth Byrne said the site would be "a fantastic addition to the city," adding "it's going to look great."

The plans were approved with a number of conditions, one of which is that the work on the centre must begin within three years of permission being granted.
