Ed Sheeran teamed up with his old school for a performance at a concert.

The singer, a former student at Thomas Mills High School, in Framlingham, Suffolk, appeared as part of a gala concert at Snape Maltings on Monday.

He performed his global hit Perfect Symphony with the school orchestra as part of a celebration of the school's 45th anniversary.

It came days after Sheeran called on the government to improve music education to give children from all backgrounds musical opportunities. His letter was backed by other artists including Annie Lennox, Harry Styles and Sir Elton John.

Monday's gala concert also featured a range of performances from other school alumni and current pupils including choirs, orchestral pieces, piano solos, jazz and contemporary music.

Headteacher Philip Hurst, said: "When you play music you are part of a team but you can also act as an individual, your own traits can flourish, you can enjoy your personality - it's just so wonderful.

"For me to be in the audience in this magnificent venue, what better experience could you get? When you think about it for a state school such as ours, this is relatively rare. Shouldn't this be something that every child should experience?"

The school, which has been operated as an academy trust since 2011, backed Sheeran's letter.

Mr Hurst added: "I think music education is in a dire state and honestly we should be saying how can every student in this country experience what we've managed to experience tonight?

"Even if you can't play an instrument, you can certainly appreciate the joy and love of music."
