Scillonian's return for final season delayed

The return to service of a ferry for what is set to be its final season connecting Cornwall with the Isles of Scilly, has been delayed due to a technical issue.

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group (ISSG) said on Thursday a gearbox problem had been detected on the Scillonian III during a test which meant it could not return to service on Friday as planned.

ISSG added engineers based in Falmouth were working to get the repair completed as soon as possible, but did not give a new date for its return.

A new boat, Scillonian IV, is expected to start crossings between Penzance and Scilly next year, bringing an end to Scillonian III's service.

A spokesperson for ISSG said: "During post-layup sea trials [for Scillonian III], an issue was identified with the gearbox to intermediate shaft coupling, which includes the shaft brake.

"To address this, further work has been required, including verifying the port-side propeller shaft alignment."

Scillonian IV and a new cargo ship have been constructed in Vietnam with plans to begin crossings in spring 2026.

ISSG said Scillonian III made its first crossing in 1977 and has made more than 10,000 trips to the islands.
