Inmates fighting LA fires: 'Happy to pay my debt this way'

More than 1,100 prisoners have joined firefighting efforts to battle the Eaton and Palisades fires in the Los Angeles area.

State authorities, along with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, operate 35 fire camps where inmates become certified wildland firefighters.

They can earn from $5.80 (£4.76) to $10.24 (£8.41) a day depending on experience, with an extra $1 an hour during active wildfires, according to the corrections department.

The fires in Los Angeles have killed 27 people and destroyed more than 12,000 homes and businesses so far.
