Woman's near miss with train at level crossing
A woman narrowly missed being hit by a train on a level crossing shown in a dramatic video.
Network Rail released the footage of the woman having to take a step back before nearly walking into the path of the train, which was travelling up to 60mph, in Southport on Merseyside.
The rail firm said she came within "half a second" of being struck on Crescent Road, Birkdale, just after 09:30 GMT on 24 January.
Network Rail said the woman, who appeared to be "distracted", had ignored the "warning lights and audible signals" of an approaching train as it issued a safety warning around level crossings.
Simon Shipperd, Network Rail level crossing manager, said: "In my time as a level crossing manager, I haven't seen a near miss this close to being a fatality.
"The individual appeared to be completely unaware of her surroundings, suggesting she may have been distracted at the time."
