A number of bus service timetable changes have been rolled out in South Tyneside and Sunderland.

Go North East said it had increased the frequencies of buses serving Pennywell, Sunderland and Grangetown, while in South Tyneside it said new routes would run from Cotswolds Estate towards Jarrow.

The operator said it "understood its bus services were vital for people across the region".

It comes as Go North East bus drivers and engineers said buses were sent back into service before defects are fixed, leading to delays and cancellations.

The company said it was "conducting an in-depth review" with the aim it "never again falls short of keeping a full fleet on the road at all times" after widespread problems earlier this month.

Go North East said recent sub-zero temperatures had affected vehicle systems, including batteries and engines.

But drivers said the situation was "exacerbated" by existing problems.

Meanwhile, the operator announced a number of changes to services, which take effect on Sunday.

They include:

  • The 61 and 62/A services will operate up to every 30 minutes between Pennywell, Sunderland and Grangetown.
  • Services 61, 62 and 62A to run up to every seven to eight minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes
  • Services 60 and 63 from Ryhope Green to Sunderland will operate every 7-8 minutes
  • There will be 14 buses per hour between Grangetown and Sunderland city centre
  • In Jarrow, services 9, 25 and 35 will run from York Avenue every 15 minutes
  • Service 36 will provide new links from Cotswolds Estate towards Jarrow
  • In Fellgate, changes to service 35 and new service 36 to Sunderland will run from Monday to Saturday

Daniel Laird, from Go North East, said the timetables had been implemented after "careful analysis of journey data and passenger habits".

The company asked users to view the new timetables on its website ahead travelling.
