A mother and daughter have gone of trial accused of killing a shop security guard by attacking him with a walking frame.

Nicola Gordon, 37, and Teresa Gordon, 59, also known as Teresa Orr, face a charge of culpable homicide as well as an assault and theft charge.

Bill Ireland went into cardiac arrest following a struggle with the women after he confronted them for shoplifting at the Rejects store in Kirkcaldy, Fife, on 6 January last year.

They have denied all charges.

Security guard Graham Hutton, 38, told the High Court in Edinburgh that on the day of his death Mr Ireland, who was his supervisor, did not appear unwell.

He was asked if shoplifting was a problem at the store at St Clair Street and said the area was "quite bad for it".

Mr Hutton said that three days before the incident Nicola and Teresa Gordon were seen at the shop with an older woman who was walking with the assistance of a walking frame.

He said they were seen to go past a cash desk and out the shop with "no attempt to pay".

The younger woman was then seen to transfer tins of paint from a pink bag to a rucksack.

When they returned on 6 January in the company of another woman Mr Hutton was in the security office with Mr Ireland.

He said his boss went to apprehend Nicola Gordon after she was seen again putting paint in a bag.

He said the accused put up a "struggle" but Mr Ireland managed to get the bag with the goods from her.

The court was shown footage of the incident.

Mr Hutton said that the security guard then attempted to make his way back to the office, adding he shouted "for assistance".

Mr Ireland was then seen to collapse.

Mr Hutton said he was trying to keep the situation calm but Teresa Gordon was shouting abuse. He said: "At one moment she shouted 'I hope he dies'."

Emergency services were called by Mr Ireland was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is alleged they both assaulted him, struggled with him, attempted to wrestle a rucksack and jacket from him.

The pair are also accused of repeatedly striking him on the legs with a walking frame, as well as shouting and swearing at him.

They are also accused of stealing tins of paint and a knife block.

The trial before Lady Ross continues.
