A surfer with suspected broken ribs had to be rescued from the sea on Saturday.

South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) said it was called out at 12:57 BST to near Souter Lighthouse in South Shields following reports of another incident involving a windsurfer in difficulty.

The team asked Tynemouth RNLI to go check on the individual when another surfer nearby fell from his board and was injured. They took him ashore but he was struggling to breathe, so the team called an ambulance who thought he may have broken his ribs.

Meanwhile, rescuers momentarily lost sight of the windsurfer but they were eventually spotted further down the coast off Seaburn beach.

The injured surfer was taken to hospital for treatment, with an SSVLB spokesperson saying: "We wish him a speedy recovery."
