Barclays to close branch in northern town in April

Barclays has announced plans to close its branch in the north of the Isle of Man citing more customers moving to online banking as the reason.

The branch on Parliament Street in Ramsey will close to customers on 11 April, and follows an announcement that the nearby Lloyds facility would close in February.

The bank said the "difficult decision" had been taken as changes in habits had "had a big impact on the number of customers coming in to see us".

It means the organisation's only site that offers face-to-face banking services will be at the branch on Victoria Street in Douglas.

The organisation said it had seen "many customers" choose to use services on the mobile app, online and on the phone instead of the branch.

Those options would remain available to customers that had used the in-person services in the past, it said.

Making the announcement to customers the bank said fewer customers were regularly using the branch as the only way to do their banking and 90% of the branch those who did visit it had also used other facilities over the last year.

It means the Isle of Man Bank will be the only bank to have a physical base in the town, following the announcement by Lloyds Bank last year.

Barclays also closed its branch in Castletown, in the south of the island, in February 2024.
