Residents have been allowed to return home after a man was seen brandishing a knife in a flat above shops in south-east London.

Footage published on social media on Monday showed the man leaning out of a third-floor window with what appeared to be a kitchen knife and also waving it around inside the property in Lewisham High Street.

Armed police could be seen near the flat during the incident.

The Met said it was called out at about 10:45 GMT on Monday, and officers entered the address shortly before 02:00 GMT today. A man was detained before being taken to hospital, the force said.

The Met previously said it did not believe anyone else was inside the property.

The high street was closed off most of the afternoon and Lewisham Council confirmed in a post on X that all cordons had now been lifted.

A branch of HSBC opposite closed as a precaution, and the bank said no customers or staff were involved.
