The A1 was closed until around 11:30 BST

The A1 in County Durham has reopened following a crash in the early hours.

Emergency services were called to a "serious collision" involving one vehicle, near Coxhoe, just before 02:20 BST, Durham Police said.

A stretch of the road northbound and southbound, between J60 Bradbury and J62 Carville, was closed until around 11:30 BST.

National Highways said delays had reached 60 minutes above normal travel times on the northbound carriage.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said four fire engines attended the incident and left the scene at 03:24 BST.

Meanwhile, the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said it had sent a double crewed ambulance and a rapid response paramedic.
