A train line has reopened following major disruption to services after a large fire at an industrial unit.

Five appliances were called to tackle the blaze in Birtley, Gateshead, which broke out just before 15:00 BST on Tuesday.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) said the lines between Durham and Newcastle had now reopened and trains have resumed to a normal service.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen at the site and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service had urged nearby residents to keep windows and doors shut.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said crews arrived at the scene within six minutes of being called out.

"Crews were deployed from Birtley, Swalwell, Washington, Gateshead and Marley Park Community Fire Stations and spent several hours extinguishing the fire, before leaving the scene shortly after 22:00 BST."
