Friday 9 May will mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day

Organisers of the 80th anniversary Liberation Day celebrations have said they think the event could be the largest one yet.

Jeff Vidamour, director of the Liberation Day Cavalcade, said owners of 120 military vehicles were planning to travel from the UK to Guernsey for the celebrations.

He said the vehicles would be transported on a special ferry sailing from Poole on 5 May and would tour the island in the days leading up to the cavalcade.

The events planned for Friday 9 May will mark the 80th anniversary of the day German occupying forces left the island at the end of World War Two.

The cavalcade route will begin at the Peninsula Hotel in Vale and end in St Peter Port

Mr Vidamour said the Guernsey Military Vehicle Group had been "spreading the word" about the cavalcade on its visits to groups in the UK.

He said: "There's no end of people that wish to come over."

The cavalcade is due to begin at the Peninsula Hotel in Vale and then drive through Pembroke, Bordeaux and St Sampsons, before ending in St Peter Port.

"We do our best to put on a good show for the people of Guernsey," Mr Vidamour added.
