A council is bringing back free compost giveaways for a third time after the events proved to be "ever-popular".

East Riding of Yorkshire Council will hand out 60 tonnes of compost to residents during eight events, held from May 3 to 17.

The compost, with residents entitled to two free bags each, is entirely recycled from garden and food waste from what East Riding residents placed in their brown bins throughout the year.

The events were previously held in September and May last year and are "always popular with local residents", the council said.

'Giving something back'

The giveaways will begin in Beverley before moving on to Preston, Goole, Hornsea, Pocklington, Withernsea, Driffield and Carnaby.

All brown bin contents collected in the East Riding get recycled into compost at the Biowise plant in Willerby, the council said.

Carl Skelton, director of streetscene services, said: "These events are the council's way of thanking residents and giving something back for their continuing support of our recycling schemes."
