Woman dies in village house fire

A woman has died after a house fire in Essex.

Firefighters said they were called to the semi-detached property in Ickledon Road in Elmdon, near Saffron Walden, at 23:18 GMT on Sunday.

Two other people were injured in the blaze and were taken to hospital for treatment to burns and for smoke inhalation.

An investigation will take place to establish the cause of the fire.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service was joined by colleagues from Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

The entire building was alight when crews arrived and firefighters needed "many hours" to bring it under control and limit damage to the neighbouring property, a spokesperson said.
