Two men have been arrested after a high-speed pursuit through Brighton ended in a crash.

The driver of a silver Volkswagen Golf failed to stop after officers were alerted to the possible stolen vehicle at 18:20 GMT on Sunday.

The car was driven dangerously through the Queens Park and Hanover area of the city before it was stopped by officers from the Roads Policing Unit and Tactical Firearms Unit, Sussex Police said.

The driver, a 37-year-old man from Brighton, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop, drug driving and other drug and traffic offences.

During the pursuit, the car was driven in excess of 60mph in 20mph zones, through red light signals, the wrong way down a one-way street and the wrong side of the carriageway, police said.

The passenger, a 21-year-old man from Hove, decamped from the vehicle and was pursued on foot.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of being carried in or on a vehicle taken without the owner's consent and other drug offences.

Both men have been bailed, pending further inquiries.

Insp Matt Wightwick said officers were able to safely stop the vehicle before anyone was seriously harmed.

"This was a high-speed pursuit which posed a high risk to the public in Brighton," he said.
