Calderdale Council's cabinet will next week discuss plans to close Elland household waste recycling centre

Councillors are set to discuss plans to close Elland household waste recycling centre permanently as part of efforts to save money.

A proposal to shut the site in Huddersfield Road will be discussed by Calderdale Council's cabinet next week.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the move would save the Labour-run authority around £180,000 a year.

Liberal Democrat councillors have put forward an alternative idea, to close all five of the council's recycling centres for two days a week.

Councillors are to discuss the plans in a meeting at Halifax Town Hall on Monday 13 January.

It is the second time closing the Elland centre has been suggested, with councillors arguing last year the town was close enough to other facilities.

However, the site was saved after a public outcry, with critics saying closure would result in more traffic on the roads, bigger queues at other centres and more fly-tipping.

If councillors were to back plans to reduce operating hours at all five sites the changes would come into effect from autumn, with tips closed on different days to ensure at least one is open each day.

Both proposals are due to be discussed by councillors on 13 January.

This story has been updated to clarify Liberal Democrat councillors had proposed an alternative to the site's permanent closure, which they oppose.
