Disturbances in Harehills last summer resulted in a number of people being charged

A teenage boy has denied violent disorder following large-scale disturbances in the Harehills area of Leeds last summer.

The 13-year-old appeared at the city's youth court earlier and spoke through an interpreter. He cannot be named due to his age.

Hundreds of people gathered in the area on 18 July and disorder broke out, including a bus being set alight.

A 59-year-old man also appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Thursday charged with arson and violent disorder.

Robert Lockwood, of Brecon Approach, Gipton, was bailed to appear at Leeds Crown Court on 6 February.

The teenager, from Harehills, was also given bail and told to return to Leeds Youth Court on 21 March.

The disorder began when police officers helped social workers to take four children into care.

West Yorkshire Police have made 40 arrests in connection with it. Fifteen people have been charged and five have already been sentenced.

Officers are continuing to use CCTV footage and facial recognition technology to trace those involved in the disturbance.
