A man has been charged with murdering a 38-year-old man who was stabbed to death in the street in the early hours of New Year's Day.

He was found with a severe knife wound on Essex Street in Rochdale at about 02:40 GMT on 1 January and later died, Greater Manchester Police said.

Hassan Suliman of Rothesay Terrace in Rochdale has been charged with murder, assault and possessing an offensive weapon and a bladed article.

The 30-year-old was due to appear before Wigan Magistrates' Court.

Det Insp Paul Davies said the attack was another "tragic incident that has seen a member of the community in Rochdale, needlessly lose their life".

He said officers would continue to support the victim's family "at this difficult time".
