Miners welfare re-opens after being hit by car

A Nottinghamshire miners welfare that was forced to close after a suspected drunk driver crashed into a house attached to it has reopened.

Emergency services were called to the venue, known as the 'Top Club', in Hollinwood Lane, Calverton, at about 22:50 GMT on 28 December after the car struck a parked vehicle, left the road and hit the building.

Dean Wilson, chair of trustees, said a family who were evacuated from their first floor flat after the crash will not be able to move back in to the property "for months" because the floor is "hanging on by a thread".

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Mr Wilson said the club had been forced to cancel a number of events, including its New Year's Day party and a wake.

"We had an evening of fun and games planned for New Year's Day," he said.

"We're just very pleased that that the damage hasn't transferred through to the welfare part of the the whole building.

Mr Wilson added his thoughts remained with the family, who now face the prospect of months out of their home.

"The car that hit the house has damaged two of the main support beams so the building is tilting slightly," he said. "All the bedrooms have cracks in them.

"We're supporting the family the best we can and we've re-funded all the rent they've paid."

The family are staying in a hotel while alternative accommodation is found.

Nottinghamshire Police said an investigation into the incident was ongoing.
