Mountain rescue volunteers save walker from snow

A hiker with hypothermia was rescued from the Peak District after getting stuck in snow.

Glossop Mountain Rescue Team said it had received a call from a walker at about 15:20 GMT on Tuesday.

Despite mobility and visibility being impaired by the weather, the team managed to track him down around the Hern stones area and used a sled to bring him to safety.

About 60 volunteers - 30 from Glossop Mountain Rescue, 18 from Edale Mountain Rescue and 12 from Kinder Mountain Rescue - were involved in the rescue effort.

The rescue team said it had requested help from the coastguard due to "the potential for life-threatening injuries", but the helicopter could not be used due to the weather.

The walker was found to be suffering with "significant hypothermia" and was taken to a waiting ambulance for treatment.

Glossop Mountain Rescue Team said its members "stood down at midnight to get some well-deserved hot food".

"We couldn't have done it without the support of our neighbouring teams," the team added.
