McDonald's outlet gets approval with conditions

The fast food firm McDonald's has been given the go-ahead to open a new outlet in Surrey, but with extra conditions attached.

On Thursday Tandridge District Council approved the application for a restaurant in Quadrant House, Croydon Road.

Jenny Gaffney, a Liberal Democrat councillor for Valley who opposed the scheme, told BBC Radio Surrey "it is a divisive issue, it'll be a divisive issue for years to come and the issues won't go away".

McDonald's said the new restaurant would bring investment to the area.

Ms Gaffney welcomed the extra conditions imposed.

"With regard to the delivery drivers" she said, "we've managed to make sure they've left the area by 10 o'clock at night.

"We also got to make sure they have CCTV on the front and the back, if there is any problem with anti-social behaviour they'll be able to go to the police.

"I know there are lots of people who said we're just being Nimbys [not in my back yard], but we wanted to make sure that as many of the issues that have been raised by residents have been dealt with."

A spokesman for McDonald's said: "We are excited about the opportunity to open a restaurant in Caterham and are delighted our planning application was approved by the local council.

"The restaurant will bring significant investment to the local area and deliver up to 120 full and part-time jobs."
