William McNicholl was found dead in Ipswich on New Year's Day

Magistrates have given detectives investigating the murder of a 63-year-old man found dead on New Year's Day more time to question a teenage boy, said police.

William McNicholl was found dead at a property on Hawthorn Drive in Ipswich shortly after 18:00 GMT on 1 January.

A 17-year-old boy and a woman in her 50s were arrested on suspicion of murder.

The teenager remains in custody while the woman was previously released on bail pending further investigation.

Post-mortem tests indicated that Mr McNicholl, who was known as Billy, died after suffering head injuries and a stab wound.

The teenager was arrested on Wednesday, but magistrates in Ipswich decided questioning could continue into Friday.

The arrested woman is due to report back to police on 9 April.

'Heart of gold'

Mr McNicholl's family have paid tribute to him, calling him a "cheeky geeza with a fun sense of humour".

They added: "Love him or hate him, the man with many names who meant lots of different things to different people was cool, clever and eccentric.

"His friends, five nieces and sister remember him as kind and generous, even when he didn't have much himself – he was a larger than life character with a heart of gold."
