Viral Aussie baffled by T-shirt wearing Brits
An Australian tourist's baffled response to seeing locals wearing T-shirts during the recent cold weather has drawn in more than two million views across TikTok and Instagram.
Ella Lowgren visited a friend in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, when temperatures dropped below freezing.
She said she “couldn’t understand” seeing “girlies in stockings rolling around, no jackets on, nothing”.
“None of you are able to dress for the weather in any capacity,” she said, “it’s cold.”
Ms Lowgren has travelled to Germany and Sweden in winter conditions where she said people dressed more appropriately.
Amongst the thousands of comments, it was suggested that alcohol could have played a part in what she saw.
“I refuse to believe that every single one of them was wearing a ‘beer jacket’ which is a term I’ve just learnt,” she laughed.
Online responders had also told her to “toughen up“ and that thermals were not necessary for last week’s wintery weather.
Despite not joining in with the common dress code, Ms Lowgren did embrace the local delicacies and told BBC Radio Stoke she looked forward to revisiting.
“Oatcakes slap - they’re really good,” she exclaimed, “I have no idea how I’m going to have those back at home but they were definitely one of the highlights.”
The game developer from Melbourne was visiting a friend of 10 years that she met whilst living in Tokyo, and she left impressed by his hometown.
“I really enjoyed my time in Newcastle-under-Lyme.”
