Plans for a permanent sauna within a beach's conservation area have been moved after a consultation.

Company Steam and Salt applied to North Tyneside Council last year for permission to erect a permanent sauna cabin by the access road leading to King Edward's Bay in Tynemouth.

The firm has now applied to change the location of the cabin to the promenade on Longsands beach, slightly to the north of Tynemouth Pool.

Planning documents show the council suggested the move to an area closer to existing steps to the beach.

They added: "The site is located within the Tynemouth Conservation Area and is located within a well trafficked part of the coast.

"A short distance from the site are existing shipping containers and a long-established cafe/restaurant."

The original plans received 180 letters in support on the council's planning portal, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The initial floor space of the sauna, which is described as a pre-fabricated structure made in Sweden, has also been halved to 215 sq ft (20 sq m).
