Motorists are facing delays on the A27 in East Sussex as part of the road remains closed following overnight works.

National Highways said it had been forced to close the Southwick Tunnel after message signs above the carriageways were found not to be working.

A spokesperson for the agency said it was working to get the road fully re-opened after roadworks overran from their pre-agreed end time of 06:00 GMT.

The eastbound section of the road has since re-opened but the westbound section remains closed, it added.

A National Highways spokesperson added: "We understand the inconvenience this has caused to those travelling in the area and are working with our contractors to get this fixed and the road fully reopened as quickly as possible."

Diversions were put in place ahead of rush hour traffic on Friday morning.

"If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time," said National Highways.

"Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."
