Wales' top doctor during Covid pandemic steps down
Wales' top doctor, who oversaw the nation's response to the Covid pandemic, has announced he will stand down after eight-and-a-half years.
As chief medical officer Sir Frank Atherton provided independent advice to the Welsh government during the pandemic.
Announcing his decision to stand down at the end of the month, he described his position as a privilege and a highlight of his career, having served Wales during an "incredibly challenging time".
Health Secretary Jeremy Miles said Sir Frank played a leading role in the response to the pandemic and was extremely grateful for his "invaluable advice and guidance".
Sir Frank received a knighthood in 2021 for his services to public health and was also responsible for leading the development of health and care research.
He was appointed Wales' CMO in 2016 after serving as deputy chief medical officer of health in Canada.
Sir Frank said: "I would like to thank all those other civil servants, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes, who have assisted me for almost a decade in this role."
Judith Paget, chief executive of NHS Wales, said it had been "a privilege to work with him and to have the benefit of his experience and commitment".
The Welsh government said Sir Frank's successor would be announced in due course.
