A 27-year-old man has appeared in court accused of trying to murder an infant, found with "catastrophic" injuries.

Rhydian Jamieson from Cwm Cou, Newcastle Emlyn, is charged with attempted murder.

He was arrested after police were called to a property in the village Y Ferwig, in Ceredigion, on Wednesday night following a report of concerns for an infant's welfare.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the child had been taken to hospital where they remain in a critical condition.

Haverfordwest Magistrates' Court heard that the infant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had suffered "catastrophic and life-threatening" injuries.

Wearing a grey sweatshirt, Mr Jamieson, made no application for bail and was remanded in custody to appear at Swansea Crown Court on 21 February.

Local councillor Clive Davies said the incident had been a "shock" for the community and that his thoughts are with the family.
