Gardaí (Irish police) are investigating the death of man in his 60s in a fire at an apartment building in Cork.

Gardaí and the fire brigade received a report of the fire at 18:50 GMT on Friday evening.

The man's body was found inside the property.

He has been named locally as Michael O'Sullivan, Irish broadcaster RTÉ has reported.

The fire happened at an apartment on Togher Road, in the south side of Cork.

A second person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, according to RTÉ.

A Gardaí spokesperson said officers are "working to determine the cause of the fire".

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

The examination results, along with a technical examination of the scene, will guide the ongoing investigation, Gardaí added.
