Leisure centre to close for a year for refurb work

A Hull leisure centre will close for about 12 months to allow for work to improve the building's energy-efficiency.

Hull City Council said the work at Ennerdale Leisure Centre would help to secure the centre's long-term future.

The measures, which include upgrading the pool hall windows and repairs to the small pool, are being financed by a £750,000 grant from Sport England.

The leisure centre is due to close on 19 May, with work expected to be completed by summer 2026.

Rob Pritchard, Hull City Council's portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: "Ennerdale Leisure Centre is a much-loved facility in Hull, but its building fabric is approaching 40 years old and needs regeneration."

He said he understood the frustration the closure would cause, but the improvements were necessary as part of the council's commitment to reducing its energy consumption.

The council has committed money for planned roofing work and the replacement of external doors, with work due to take place at the same time to avoid further disruption.

The outdoor cycle track at the centre will remain open for pre-booked club use during the closure.
