A couple who run a village post office said they have been overwhelmed by support after it was ram raided.

A silver van crashed into Winterbourne Post Office, in Flaxpits Lane, before two men entered the shop at about 23:50 GMT on Tuesday, according to police.

The community has since rallied to help Viren and Sheela Chudasama, who run the branch, and a fundraiser has now raised more than £3,000.

Mr Chudasama said he was "devastated" by the incident but was determined to "bounce back".

"As soon as the alarm rang I was shattered," Mr Chudasama told BBC Radio Bristol.

"I was so sad because we work so much and this is our bread and butter. Without this, we would be helpless."

He said the store's shelves were destroyed by the crash, with stock ruined.

Mr Chudasama added: "We cleared everything the next day and we're back in business."

Neesha Woods set up a fundraiser with the hope of raising £500 to support the couple. More than 200 people have so far donated about £3,000.

"A lot of people were asking how they could help. It's really good that everyone wanted to donate," said Ms Woods.

"They're always so smiley and friendly when we go in."

Avon and Somerset Police is investigating the incident. No arrests have been made.
