New sculpture honours 'remarkable' railway pioneer

A sculpture honouring a "remarkable" railway pioneer has been unveiled.
A two-metre-tall hand-carved statue of Sir Daniel Gooch has been revealed at Swindon's GWR Park.
Sir Daniel was a key figure in the development of the Great Western Railway, who, at the age of 24, recommended to build the line in Swindon in a letter to Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Graham Derham, who carved the sculpture from wood, said: "I hope I've done him justice and helped bring to light a man who is so often overshadowed by Brunel."
Sir Daniel Gooch was the first Superintendent of Locomotive Engines on the Great Western Railway from 1837 to 1864, and its chairman from 1865 until his death in 1889.
"Daniel Gooch was remarkable, his engineering expertise, compassion towards the workers, his energy, forethought and will is inspiring," Mr Derham added.
"This project has been fantastic to work on.
"There have been several challenges, both logistically with the working platforms and organically with the structure of the tree.
"I'm very pleased with the end result, however, given more time there is much more I would like to do."

The work, commissioned by South Swindon Parish Council, marks the next stage in the regeneration of Swindon's oldest public park.
"I'm thrilled to see this magnificent sculpture completed," said councillor Linda Kasmaty, chair of Leisure, Environment and Amenities for South Swindon Parish Council.
"Public art such as this is so important as it enriches our public spaces and represents Swindon's railway heritage.
"We're delighted that Graham's exceptional craftsmanship has created a new landmark for residents and park visitors to enjoy and learn about over the coming years."
