A pregnant sheep spooked by dogs had to be helped after getting stuck in mud.

Millom Coastguard Rescue Team was called to help rescue the animal near Kirkby-in-Furness railway station, in Cumbria, at 16:27 GMT on Monday.

The sheep had been scared by some dogs off their leads and had tried to jump a gully to escape, the team said, but "being weighed down with lambs, this pregnant ewe didn't make it".

Before the coastguard could arrive on the scene, members of the public were able to help the sheep and the team stood down.

"This incident could have escalated quickly," a spokesperson said. "Please keep your dogs on a lead when there are sheep about, especially during lambing season."
