A 15-year-old boy suffered head injuries when he was struck by a car in what police said they suspected was a hit-and-run.

The crash happened shortly after 14:40 BST on Sunday at the junction of Binswood Avenue and Sunnyway in Blakelaw, Newcastle.

Northumbria Police said the teenager had been riding an electric pedal bike when he was hit by a Peugeot 5008 which was later found abandoned on Colwyne Place.

The boy is in hospital in a stable condition and police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Officers said the car was silver and had a 2012 registration plate.
