Plans to demolish a former university teaching block have been approved for a second time.

The University of Sunderland re-applied in November for permission to knock down the Forster Building, off Chester Road, after approval granted in 2020 lapsed.

The site had been earmarked for almost 260 student flats with ground-floor shops, but no work took place.

Sunderland City Council has given the green light once more, with demolition due to get under way next month.

A supporting statement submitted to the local authority on behalf of the university noted "no redevelopment of the site is proposed at this time".

The building was constructed in 1975, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, but it is understood it has not been used since 2017.

Demolition is expected to be completed by the end of May.
