A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a serious assault left another man with life-threatening injuries.

Essex Police said it was called to Meadgate Avenue, Chelmsford, at about 19:10 GMT on Wednesday.

The alleged victim was given first aid at the scene before being taken to hospital by the East of England Air Ambulance but his injuries were no longer considered to be life-threatening.

Det Insp Andy Drake said: "There will be an increased police presence in the Meadgate Avenue area while this investigation continues and we would like to reassure everyone that there is no wider risk to the public."

He continued: "This has been an incredibly fast-moving investigation – a lot of work has already been carried out at the scene and we will be conducting further enquiries today to establish exactly what happened on Wednesday evening.

"Paramedics and officers, first on the scene, carried out vital first aid and I'd like to thank them for their efforts to help this victim."

A 20-year-old man from Great Baddow who was arrested remained in custody on Thursday.

Essex Police has asked anyone with dashcam footage or more information to get in touch to help them with inquiries.
