A man who was spotted swinging a knife around him in Doncaster city centre on Christmas Eve has been jailed.

A member of the public called police at about 11:10 GMT on 24 December to report a male "swiping" at things with a knife, police said.

Adam Bambrough, 19, was arrested shortly afterwards and was charged with possessing a knife in public, affray and causing alarm or distress, according to South Yorkshire Police.

At a sentencing hearing at Doncaster Magistrates' Court on 15 January, Bambrough, of Mansfield Road, Balby, was jailed for four months, banned from owning a knife and ordered to pay a fine.

He had also breached a bail condition which banned him from entering Silver Street, the court heard.

After the 19-year-old was sentenced, PC Gwyn Howroyd said the force was "absolutely committed" to tackling all crime and anti-social behaviour in the area.

"I hope this acts as a clear warning that violence or threats of violence will not be tolerated in Doncaster city centre."
