'Lucky' escape after car skids and lands in rhyne
A man and woman had a "lucky" escape after their car slid on a "notorious" icy road and ended up overturned in a rhyne, a witness said.
Local farmer Christopher, who did not wish to give his surname, said he saw the car driving down Backwell Bow, in North Somerset, on Thursday morning before skidding on ice and landing on its side in the water.
He said the two care workers were travelling home at the end of a night shift and were helped out of the car.
"No one was injured, luckily. It could have been so much worse," he said.
"I thought they would have been quite a bit more shaken up than they were, it was quite surprising really," said Christopher.
He described the road as being "notorious" for crashes, and said he fears more may happen again in frosty weather.
"My initial thoughts were 'there's another in the river'," he said.
The Met Office predicts temperatures will dip to -1C overnight in north Somerset ahead of another icy morning.
