The first phase of roadworks is set to begin as part of a regeneration project in the Derbyshire town of Ashbourne.

Work is due to get under way on the south section of Dig Street from Monday as a planned £15.2m regeneration of the town centre takes shape.

Derbyshire Dales District Council says a short diversion will be in place along King Edward Street, Station Road and Church Street.

The authority added all works will shut down to allow Royal Shrovetide football to go ahead on 4 and 5 March.

Market Place, Victoria Square, Millennium Square and Shrovetide Walk are due to get a revamp as part of the project, which aims to improve the pedestrian experience in the town with wider pavements and upgraded crossings.

The second phase of roadworks will start from 10 March when St John Street will be closed to traffic with wider diversions in place.
