A seal found tangled up in more than 7ft (2m) of rope has been released back into the wild, a charity has said.

The pup was saved by British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) at Danes Dyke, near Flamborough, in February, after it suffered severe neck injuries.

The seal, named Callum Oak in memory of a local teenager, was taken to an RSPCA rehabilitation centre in Nantwich.

Officials from BDMLR described the seal's return to the North Sea as "heart-warming" and thanked everyone involved in saving its life.

Following the rescue of the seal two months ago, medics removed a length of netting, consisting of rope, monofilament, debris and a pot band from its neck and gave it antibiotics.

During its time at the rehabilitation centre, the seal gained 8kg of weight and was tagged with an identification number for future sightings.

Callum Oak was returned to Danes Dyke on Monday by BDMLR and was spotted meeting another seal as it made his way out to sea.
