A woman has died and a toddler left in a critical condition after their car left the road and hit a tree in North Lincolnshire.

A black Mitsubishi Outlander was travelling west along the M180 at Barnetby between junctions 5 and 4 when it left the road and collided with a tree at 11:15 GMT on Sunday.

A 29-year-old woman and two-year-old boy, who were passengers in the car, were both taken to hospital to receive treatment. The woman later died as a result of her injuries.

The driver, a 34-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and was arrested at the scene on suspicion of being over the prescribed limit, unfit through drink and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He remains in custody whilst officers conduct lines of inquiry.

Humberside Police has appealed for anyone who may have been in the area at the time or has dashcam footage of the collision to get in touch.
